Excellence in the Community Announces the Passing of Founder Jeff Whiteley
Salt Lake City, UT — [September 25, 2025] — Excellence in the Community is deeply saddened to announce the passing of its founder, Jeff Whiteley, a visionary leader whose life and work transformed the musical landscape of Utah.
Mr. Whiteley founded Excellence in the Community in December 2005 with a bold mission: to take Utah’s best musicians out of the background music business and place them on professional stages. His vision was rooted in the belief that showcasing Utah’s finest artists more visibly, more accessibly, and more professionally would not only enrich their lives but also elevate the quality of life for all Utahns.
An accomplished musician himself, Mr. Whiteley performed extensively across Europe and Utah, most often alongside his wife of 35 years, Lori, as leaders of the acoustic ensemble Lark & Spur. Their credits include appearances at the Montreux, Brienz, and Deauville Jazz Festivals in Europe, performances on French and Swiss radio and television, Utah Symphony events, and countless concerts both public and private in Utah. He also served as tour manager for Brigham Young University’s acclaimed jazz ensemble Synthesis during its 1996 European tour.
Beyond his artistry, Mr. Whiteley’s passion was creating platforms for others. Under his leadership, Excellence in the Community has produced more than 1,430 concerts featuring Utah musicians, cultivating a vibrant and appreciative audience base and ensuring that local talent could thrive.
Mr. Whiteley’s diverse background informed his vision. He earned a Master’s degree in French Literature and Civilization from Brigham Young University and taught French at BYU and Westminster College. He also built a career in Europe and North America as a teacher, writer, musician, and businessman. His writing has been published in both French and English, further reflecting his breadth of talents.
Through all his endeavors, Mr. Whiteley remained steadfast in his belief in the transformative power of quality music. His enduring contributions continue to shape Utah’s cultural fabric, leaving behind a legacy of opportunity, artistry, and community.
Excellence in the Community extends its heartfelt condolences to his wife, son, sisters Melinda, Lisa and Jessica, family, friends, and the countless musicians and audience members whose lives were enriched by his vision and dedication.
