Larry Jackstien Quartet
| The Larry Jackstien Group presents “What Is This Thing Called Jazz?”
Larry Jackstien – piano. The leader of the ensemble, has been performing jazz since he was in middle school and is also well known in the area as a producer of significant jazz concert productions including the series presented at the Hotel Utah in the 1970’s and 1980’s and, most recently, as the founder of the Jazz in Salt Lake at the Sheraton series. Larry’s deep passion for jazz began at a young age and has blossomed into a significant part time pursuit. From studies with the great George Shearing to performances accompanying some of the most famous names in jazz history, Larry has become a local favorite among jazz aficionados as well as new initiates. His lectures on jazz have been heard by many in the community. During the 1990’s he accompanied the likes of Milt Jackson, Kenny Burrell, Stanley Turrentine, Roy Hargrove, Clark Terry and many others as they performed in the area. He is an arranger, pianist, vocalist and composer, recently having co-authored lyrics to a well known jazz piece with guitarist Kenny Burrell. In the daytime, Mr. Jackstien serves as a marketing consultant specializing in the travel and tourism industry. He is a native of Salt Lake City and holds both B.S. and MBA degrees from the University of Utah. Lars Yorgason – bass. Lars hails from Ogden, Utah and has become one of the busiest performers on the local jazz scene. He graduated from Brigham Young University and traded a music career for one in seminary instruction for the LDS Church in Cleveland, Ohio and other venues. Upon his retirement and return to the local area, he again became active in the local jazz community and continues to perform with a variety of outstanding ensembles along the Wasatch Front. As part of Mr. Jackstien’s group, Lars performed with many international giants of jazz as they appeared in Salt Lake City. He currently teaches bass and is completing a documented history of jazz in Utah which will be published soon. Wayne Coons – drums. Wayne has been part of the Utah Jazz Scene for more than 30 years and continues to be a regular perform in many of the areas best ensemble. By day, he serves as music director and percussionist for the University of Utah Dance Department. For several years he was a regular member of the group that performed with Bobby McFerrin. A master of diverse musical styles, Wayne remains one of the most tasteful drummers and percussionist in the area. Dave Compton – Harmonica and Guitar. Dave also has been part of the Salt Lake music scene for many years, having been a regular featured artist at many of the area’s best clubs. He is multi-talented as a singer, guitarist, pianist and “harpist”. With several CDs to his credit, Dave continues to be one of Salt Lake’s most appealing musical acts. His harmonic playing is especially brilliant and he remains one of the few performers on the instrument who has mastered classic jazz styles. | |
